Introducing Soundfly’s newly revamped Headliners Club program: a fully customized one-month learning and coaching experience built around your musical goals.
He plays around with what I’m calling the bridge, by taking the material and chopping it up randomly to make what I can only call a “second bridge.” He even chops up these lyrics to put them in the outro, and again, not in an established sequence! The second half of the choruses are pretty cool, how he shoves three stanzas into two bars. I’ve probably written over 200 songs myself, and I can’t remember ever doing this. Study it, people. Try it on for size.

A delicate balance between music career and everything else important in life needs to be struck by musicians who want to sustain their careers. For example, you might want to spend every waking hour making music, but if doing so isn’t making you money yet, it’s not a realistic option. And this balance doesn’t just involve money. Your close, non-musical relationships have to be prioritized as well and maintained if you want to continue to benefit from having friends and family as a safety net in your life.
Explore Soundfly’s wide array of free online courses and expand your musical skills over your lunch break! Because I’m personally so influenced by Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, I’ve spent a lot of time reading poets like Sappho, Auden, Berryman, and T.S. Eliot, and listening to Jewish and Christian liturgical music, which were all major influences on them. Cohen’s “Suzanne” oozes with classical, religiously steeped references.
For example, if you are a solo performer singing along to tracks and all you bring on stage is your phone or iPod, you’re focusing all the attention on yourself as a performer. If you choreograph dance moves, or play into this isolated, “artist in the spotlight” vibe, perfect. But if you’re only doing this because you haven’t yet figured out how to play this music live, it’s a mistake to get up there in the first place. People look at that stuff, believe me.

Making use of mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) is an easy way to reduce the amount of noise coming through floors, ceilings, and walls in your home studio. This material is made specifically for noise reduction, and cuts up to 30 dB of sound with only a single layer when applied properly. It comes in four-foot rolls that you can easily put on your walls or in your floors to help reduce the transfer of sound through these surfaces.
To collect these royalties, songwriters must be registered with a performing rights organization, or “PRO.” These organizations exist to track, collect, and distribute public performance royalties. The U.S. PROs include ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. In the UK, there’s PRS For Music, France has SACEM, Germany uses GEMA, and so on.

It may sound corny or cliché, it may sound like bad advice at first, but “fake it til you make it” is one of the core tennets of visualizing your success.

“Wait, we’re musicians, we don’t write agendas.” Ok, but that’s a great way to ensure you don’t get anything done. Being a good musician sometimes requires a little business sense, and I’ve found a clear agenda can really help. Knowing exactly what order we’re going to record in can make the whole thing so much smoother and more efficient. And laying it out a week in advance gives your bandmates and engineer a chance to prepare, make suggestions, or consider alternate approaches.
By now, you’ve probably heard us shouting from the rooftops about our new and improved customized mentorship program, the Headliners Club — or as we like to call it, our “build-your-own-course course.”

When Jack white began his solo career, he began to use blues and blacks to signify his softer approach to music — perhaps even a bit of a “cold” effect that would play into his new character — and most of all, that a new chapter in his career had begun.
Think of a narrative like a story you might read in a book. It should let people into your world and show your vulnerable and emotional side. People have been telling stories since the beginning of civilization. It’s how we learned to communicate and create culture, and being able to describe your story in a relatable way that fans can really latch onto is almost as important as being able to describe your music.
